The White Paper Section 5

The American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN)

The Committee on Professional Nutrition Education

Purpose:
The Committee on Professional Nutrition Education monitors national events affecting nutrition education, reports on these events, and makes recommendations to further the society’s goals in promoting undergraduate and graduate nutrition education. The committee interacts with the American Board of Nutrition (ABN) and other relevant groups to develop criteria for nutrition training programs and to set standards for evaluating such programs. A list of clinical nutrition training programs is compiled with criteria for evaluating them. The committee includes liaisons from the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Medical Student Association.

The American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN) / American Medical Student Association (AMSA) National Clinical Nutrition Internship Program

ASCN/AMSA NATIONAL NUTRITION INTERNSHIPS

Purpose:
In 1995, The American Society for Clinical Nutrition in conjunction with the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) established a program of internships in clinical nutrition for medical students. The purpose of the program is to increase interest in and awareness of the field of nutrition for physicians. Students will have the opportunity to experience both clinical and academic aspects of nutrition with activities that include nutrition clinics and nutrition support rounds, nutrition research conferences, and a student research paper. The student must have completed at least one year of medical school to be considered for the program. An evaluation committee of ASCN members selects the students on the basis of an essay describing their interests in nutrition as well as future goals, grades, and letters of recommendation.

Intersociety Professional Nutrition Education Consortium (IPNEC)

Objectives:

  1. Establish a paradigm for physician nutrition specialists that may attract more physicians into the field.
  2. Establish educational standards for fellowship training of Physician Nutrition Specialists (PNSs).
  3. Establish a unified mechanism for certifying PNSs.
  4. Develop a long-term plan to increase the pool of PNSs and surmount obstacles that currently impede the incorporation of nutrition education into the curricula of medical schools and p5rimary-care residency programs.
